Soldiers welcomed home in Attleboro

Soldiers welcomed home in Attleboro Three soldiers who served in Middle East war zones were welcomed home by city officials last week.

Mayor Kevin Dumas and the city council issued proclamations of appreciation to Tech Sgt. Paul Jacques, a member of the Air National Guard who served in Iraq; First Class Petty Officer Mark DesLauriers, a member of the Navy Reserve who served in Afghanistan; and Second Class Petty Officer Peter Mercier, who served in Kuwait.

In civilian life, Jacques is a city firefighter, DesLauriers is a court officer in Attleboro District Court and Mercier is employed by United Parcel Service.

DesLauriers presented the city with a flag that was flown at his post “in the face of the enemy” in Afghanistan.

Jacques said military efforts in Iraq are bearing fruit.

“There are a lot of good things going on over there,” he said.

Mercier, like his fellow soldiers, is glad to be back.

“Thank you for supporting us,” he said. “It’s good to be home.”
