Flower power pays off for Youth Commission
The city’s fledgling Youth Commission and a generous donor have guaranteed that a U.S. Marine Marching Band slated to perform in the city’s Memorial Day Parade won’t go hungry.
A local business donated thousands of flowers that were sold by the youth group the day before Mother’s Day to raise money to feed the Marines.
The commission needed to raise $1,000 to meet its goal, but it exceeded it.
All told, members of the Youth Commission raised $1,227, said the group’s adviser, City Councilor Brian Kirby.
And it didn’t take long.
Kirby said the flowers sold out in less than three hours and the kids were home in plenty of time to buy their own Mother’s Day bouquets. About a dozen youth commissioners participated.
The donor of the flowers asked to remain anonymous, Kirby said. The band is coming from North Carolina.

Both passed away last year.
The tree will be dedicated at BCS offices on Bank Street on May 30. Flood was Attleboro City Clerk for many years until her death about a year ago.
Trio ‘Run the Charles’ River
Three city residents did their part to raise awareness and help preserve the Charles River and its watershed by participating in the 26th Run of the Charles Canoe and Kayak Race last month.
Matt Shute, Heather Vaillant and Mark Kern all took part, according to a news release from the Charles River Watershed Association, which sponsored the race. The race is 24 miles long and ends in Brighton where a daylong festival was held celebrating the river.
There were more than 1,400 participants and thousands of spectators at the event, which took place April 27, according to the release.
