Five local Republican state legislators are competing in the Nov. 8 election with challengers who are mostly new to politics in one of the busiest campaign seasons in years.
State Sen. Richard Ross, R-Wrentham, is opposed by attorney Kristopher Aleksov, a Democrat from Wayland, who has never run for office before. They are competing in a district that includes North Attleboro, Plainville, Wrentham, Norfolk and Wards 1, 2, and Precinct 3A in Attleboro.
State Rep. Shawn Dooley, R-Norfolk, is running against local businessman Brian Hamlin, who has no political experience. The district includes Norfolk, Plainville and Wrentham.
Another newcomer, Democrat Michael Toole of Norton, is taking on Rep. Jay Barrows, R-Mansfield. Their district includes Foxboro, Precincts 2,3 and 6 in Mansfield, and Precincts 3, 4 and 5 in Norton.
Rep. Betty Poirier, R-North Attleboro, is being challenged by independent Scott Dubuc, a hair salon owner, who has experience as a town meeting member in North Attleboro. The district consists of North Attleboro, Precincts 1 and 5 in Mansfield and Precinct 3B in Attleboro.
Democrat Paul Jacques, an Attleboro firefighter who lives in Rehoboth, is running against Rep. Steven Howitt, R-Seekonk. Jacques has been politically active campaigning for others, but has not run for office before.
